Jones began his basketball career during his high school days. Moreover, he enrolled at Murray State University to play college basketball after playing for his high school team for a season. He was named All-Ohio Valley Conference three times, All-America honorable mention twice, and OVC Player of the Year twice in 1990 and 1991.

He was also named OVC Athlete of the Year twice in 1990 and 1991. He joined the Boston Celtics in 1998 and played there until 1999. Following that, he played with the Denver Nuggets (1999–2000), Washington Wizards (2000–2002), and Dallas Mavericks (2002–2003) among others. His last professional basketball team was the Golden State Warriors. In 2003, he became a member of the team and played for them for one season. He retired from basketball as a player in 2004.

Coach career

After playing for 11 years for franchises, he announced his retirement as a player. After that, he took a long break and returned in 2007, as a coach. Moreover, he worked as a player development coach for his past team, Dallas Mavericks. Working for the team for a long time, he left the team and was hired as an assistant coach for the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets in 2010.

There, he worked for three years and left in 2013. On 14 August 2013, he joined the Indiana Pacers as their new assistant coach. There, he worked with highly talented players such as Roy Hibbert and Paul George. After a lot of hard work by the coach and players, his team made it to the Eastern Conference Finals.
